Cinavia protection

November 29th, 2011 by Fengtao 1252,940 views

This is the place where you can find all the relevant info on the new protection for audio-video called Cinavia. It is reported to be used for protection of movie from theaters and disc releases on DVD & Blu-ray. It consists of a multi-level watermark that is embedded in the audio track and, while being theoretically transparent(not-audible) for the listener, it is supposed to resist various transformations of the audio stream like re-compression, analog playback&record, re-sampling, pitch shift, etc. The base levels are analog, but on the top level there’s the watermark payload that contains some restrictions regarding the playback environment.

The protection has two elements (one cannot work without the other):

1. The watermark embedded in audio-video content.

2. Cinavia enabled player, that will refuse to play the content if it does not match the restrictions.

Examples:

1. A movie copy made with a camcorder in a theater that contains Cinavia (THEATRICAL_NO_HOME_USE) watermark will stop playing within about 1 minute on a Playstation 3 and display a Message 1.

2. An unprotected (no AACS) Blu-ray backup of “The Losers” (US release) will mute the audio after about 20 minutes with Message 3 (for not coming from a TRUSTED_SOURCE).

We consider that it is useful for the users to know about discs that contain Cinavia protection and about players that have detectors for it.

Also, DVDFab and DVDFab Passkey provide information about original discs that have the watermark.

Twenty-fifth consumer electronics product developer licensed Cinavia as of 2010.

The bad news is Cinavia technology from Verance Corporation will become mandatory for all Blu-ray Disc players as of February 1, 2012.

There have been identified a couple of workarounds (listed in the order of usability):

1. Use the audio track from the DVD release of the same movie, particularily handy if it was a Blu&DVD Combo release.

Pros:

  • Good quality (DVD audio track is probably an AC3, cannot compare to the lossless of a BD but still good, 5.1 channels)

  • Works on any Cinavia-enabled player, because the audio has no watermark (future proof).

  • So far, there are rather few movies with Cinavia on dvd; see the above table

  • Some Blu-ray releases are combo BD/DVD

Cons:

  • Needs the DVD version as well (may be hard to source a ‘clean’, matching DVD).

  • Needs remuxing skills.

  • The DVD version may be a different mix, so the whole track may not be 100% in sync with Blu-ray release.

  • Some movies, such as Takers, has Cinavia watermark on both Blu-ray and DVD, making this workaround not applicable.

2. Embed DTS core in a PCM track, like in the DTS CDs. There is a special way in which DTS compressed can be stored in a WAV file, for example, and eventualy written on a CD-audio. A player such as VLC will see there is a DTS track inside and decode it correctly; others may not know that and will produce a hissing noise (static). So appart from embedding DTS sound in a PCM track, one absolutely needs an external AV-receiver to decode it.

Pros:

  • Very good quality, the bitrate of the DTS track is higher than of a AC3 one, from a DVD.

  • Not detectable by the Cinavia enabled player if it is set to pass-through the audio to an external decoder. This way the information about the source of content is lost and the external decoder has no reason not to decode the audio.

Cons:

  • Well, there could be a reason: if it does not know how to extract DTS from PCM. We tried this a while ago, but could not find an AV-receiver to cope with the DTS-in-PCM track, so we only mentioned it now to present you all the posibilities, even theoretical ones. This is more like: “what a nice idea, too bad I cannot use it”

3. Apparently there is another trick to be tried on a PS3 (only) and it needs you to select optical cable as output in Sound settings and checking all the sound formats (weird and dangerous! see the warning PS3 will display there), then also select the multiple output option. See this and this.

Cons:

  • We could not manage to replicate it on our PS3.

  • Seems more like a bug in the Cinavia detector of PS3 and it has been reported that it has been patched in recent firmwares.

UPDATE: The following text has been edited to include the information about latest PS3 firmware.
The following applies to fw1.60 up to fw4.00 only, so if you want to benefit from this solution do not update your console!

The first solution to disable Cinavia came from DVDFab. It is a way of creating backups so they don’t trigger Cinavia. This solution is useful for PS3 users who are the most affected by Cinavia so far. What makes it a great solution is that the disc is much like the original (with menus), a protected backup so the Cinavia-enabled player will see it as trusted source and will play it back just like the original. People have made protected (isos) backups in the past, but those had the disadvantage that they only worked with the programs that made them; well, these protected backups are supposed to work on standalone players too.

Technical details: the discs created are called BDMV-REC as they are AACS protected recordable BDMV. Another solution would be AACS protected BDAV, like the ones produced by Japanese BD recorders.

Requirements:

  • a Playstation 3 console with a firmware version smaller or equal to 4.00!

  • original Blu-ray disc with Cinavia watermark. DVDFab and DVDFab Passkey will tell if you have such a disc

  • a BD-RE (recommended for initial tests) or BD-R disc to store the protected backup

  • a BD writer

  • DVDFab and updated writing software. DVDFab checks for it anyway

Pros:

  • It is a solution to disable Cinavia, exactly as it is disabled for the original disc, due to (AACS) protection layer being active.

  • DVDFab does all the tricks involved to create such a protected backup at a push of a button.

  • The disc can preserve all the original features like menus, interactivity, BD-Live.

  • Broad firmware support: PS3 users with firmware from 1.60 and up to 4.00 can use BDMV-REC discs.

  • At any time, DVDFab or DVDFab Passkey can be used to remove the protection, if you need to.

  • This is kind of an official solution, because it involves support from AACS standards, the same standards that force adoption of Cinavia ;)

Cons:

  • Due to the change in AACS LA licensing, starting with firmware 4.10, Playstation 3 have degraded the status of Protected Backups (BDMV-REC) to regular copies without the power to disable Cinavia. They are no more in the Trusted Source list.

  • BDMV-REC is not implemented by all players. BD Players implemented Blu-ray standards as they saw fit to market their products. Not all of them have implemented the standard that BDMV-REC is based on, AACS Recordable BDMV, fully. PS3, being one of the best players, did.

  • If not on PS3, we encourage users to check the playback support for “AACS protected recordable BDMV” either with BD Player support or with a BD-RE.

  • PC players support protected BDAV, but not BDMV-REC.

  • Cinavia is not removed, just disabled. Well, whatever works :) We tried to provide you with a solution asap and this was the quickest.

Rant: While there was no technical need, we implemented this solution so only original discs could be backed up with this method. Unfortunately, AACS LA didn’t seem to notice that or they were set not to allow people to backup their own, purchased, discs at any cost, including the change of licensing in the last minute, before the “big launch”, plus the change in code of PS3 and other players that have Cinavia implemented already. Too bad, that makes us even more determined to remove the watermark.

We were planning to add support for the above-mentioned protected BDAV which would give a much broader adoption among BD Players, without having all the features: no menu, no interactivity, no BD-live, simply a Movie-only format. But since all AACS-protected Recordables have been degraded it does not make much sense now.

Last but not least, we are also working on a removal solution ;)

If your disc is protected by Cinavia, DVDFab will detect it and handle it directly, and you need no second product, just copy the disc content into BDMV – REC disc. The copied disc shall be played on your device.

hmmmm.. i made a strange discovery… ive been studying audio with this protection and i noticed everyone is looking for a embeded sound in the audio file, but i noticed that about every 20 seconds for about 1/30th of a second there is a missing gap of sound.. strange.. this occurs every 20 sec and every 3 gaps are a dif size then they repeat again. i think this may be the code your looking for. its not embedded sound.. its missing sound being read by the player and i bed the size indicates to the player what code to generate o.O

Are you looking for a solution to make mkv-backups of Cienavia-protected blurays possible too?

  • JasonBond

What if you have a video file already ripped from a disc with the cinavia protection on it. Will DVDfab take off the protection through encoding, or will it only work if you are the original ripper of the file from the disc?

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Currently, you may try to copy the Cinavia protected disc onto another disc with Blu-ray copy by creating BDMV – REC disc. Then you may try to rip the copied disc into MKV. We will keep updating to make it easier. You may pay close attention to our news and updates.

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Currently, DVDFab only works with the Cinavia protected Blu-ray discs. You may try to backup the disc by creating BDMV – REC blu-eay discs and the new disc shall have no protections and played well on your devices such as PS3.

hmm. i bought dvd fab blu ray copy but i already upgraded my ps3 to 4.1 version. what do i do now?

  • Tony_online

Its probably not the size of the gap, more likely its frequency modulated, i.e. the gap location may move by some milliseconds back and forth. This would make removal of the “gap” difficult because the gap cannot always be accurately and leaving even a small millisecond gap may be enough to transfer Cinavia info to the system. I used to have audio engineering experience a looong time ago. But I honestly cant see why the audio tech guys cant sort this out. I dont know enough about the whole cinavia system but this I do know. Its just a matter of time before someone somewhere finds a workaround and then Sony and all those that put money into this system will be licking their wounds

This may be a dumb idea. Not very technologically advanced here, but i get by OK. I use the DVD audio method, with BluRay video.
I was wondering though, is there a way to isolate the low frequency sound in the BluRay soundtrack and eliminate it? There must be a way to access all the tracks that make up a movies soundtrack, and remove the one that causes Cinavia to react.

Yes, DVD Fab Blu-ray Copy will help you to create BDMV-REC discs to make sure the disc content is fully copied to another disc.

Yes, but what I have is movie bluray files architecture on my harddisk.
(already unprotected but has the audio cinavia)
Is it possible to emulate as a BR drive and try to burn to a real Bluray recorder using the trick you provide?

  • funkjunkie

I’ve managed to bypass the cinavia protection by doing the following. It’s not the easiest, but it’s been successful for me. Using the Green Hornet as an example, I have the BR rip and a DVD rip. Using Premiere Pro, I take the Blu Ray video, remove the BR audio and replace it with the standard dvd audio. So far I’ve done 5 movies this way and its worked every time. I know it’s not the best method, but until then. Just make sure both files (BR and standard) are the same version of the movie being corrected.

  • greylion

Has it been considered, that (once the encoding method is figured out) the watermark could be a value that, if run through a hashing algorithm, would yield a value that just fits within some range or solves some equation that has billions of (other) solutions?

In other words, the watermark could be unique even for each release/edition of a movie, so looking for a recurring watermark across different releases/movies might be useless.

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Yes, DVDFab Blu-ray Copy will help you to copy the cinavia protected disc into BDMV-REC.

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

You may try out DVDFab Blu-ray Copy with a Cinavia protected disc, just enable the option to create BDMV-REC disc.

  • Darage

Is it possible to add in the new feature a possibility for “already ripped BR without encryption” the possibility to add Cinavia protection on a blank BR

What I would like to know in other terms, If I have already unprotected folders on my harddrive with cinavia sound, is it possible to rebuild a BR with encryption in order to emulate my BR disc as original?

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Thank you very much for your suggestion, as you know Cinavia protection is not a technology developed by DVDFab working team. With DVDFab you can only remove that protection but you cant add this protection to videos.

the new movie ted has this problem with my ps3 fully updated software gives me message 1 but it plays on my old dvd player which is over 16mths old regin 4

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Thank you very much for your feedback, Sorry to say that if your ps3 has the latest firmwre, DVDfab cant offer you a solution. Maybe, this problem will be solved in future version.

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Sorry to say that, the current cinavia solution can only support firmware between 1.6 to 4.0.

  • R H

Newbie questions… My PS3 system software version seems to be 3.15. Does that mean, that I’ve been “infected” with Cinavia? Is there any way to downgrade back to older firmware, which does not have it, or is it impossible? Where can I download firmware files? (website with instructions)

  • Blade Hunter MSA

If Cinavia cannot be beaten, then what about creating some method into DVDFab, which will make it into “thinking” that the actual, original Blu-Ray disc is inserted? Even if it is only the backup copy inside the player. Just a thought.

  • SteveDobbs

How about just roll back your firmware on your PSP.

Or don’t use the PSP as your media player. Or if you are not a gamer do not buy PSP at all. Screw Sony.

  • SteveDobbs

Of course it can be beaten, eventually. Worst case scenario is to mod the hardware to defeat the hardware detection of the signal.

In the meantime, boycott buying any Bluray disc with Cinavia and just download a pirate rip instead for playback on a non-cinavia device. Hit them where it hurts – in the wallet.

  • zenculture

What about the new av receivers such as onkyo 616 which has new firmware for cinavia, will that effect playing thru software players such as mpc-hc

  • zenculture

have noticed av receivers are updating firmware to include cinavia I have been using a htpc to play all my dvd rips so no current problem with cinavia however will the firmware on the av receiver pick up the watermark and so mute the audio any thoughts

  • Ol_fenian

Yeah, I think it’s time for a total Sony boycott.

  • Rich86

The Sony blu-ray release “Take Shelter” is infected with cinavia. Avoid it.

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Nice idea, but it might be difficult to roll back the firmware if you are not the professional.

  • PLUG

If this protection is transparent regardless of how the audio is copied, camcorder, direct etc, then the audio track itself will contain the inaudible parts to trigger the protection flag. Therefore, somewhere on an original Bluray/DVD must be a flag that tells the player this disc is legit. This must be common through the process, and common to all protected discs. If this flag can be located then I would imagine it could be inserted onto a copied disc, thus making the machine ignore the protection as it will believe it is legit. You must have found this flag and written DVDfab to add it to the copy, thus making the copy play. This flag must be on the audio track at the beginning, so should be able to be over layed onto the audio through muxing

  • PLUG

To help the vast majority of people bypass cinavia can you include AVCHD in your next release. MKV is the standard that people grab HD in. You can easily convert this to AVCHD using MULTIAVCHD for example. If DVDFAB can have a back for AVCHD that will add the valid AACS certificate – problem solved

  • dadrian

  • PLUG

Looks like Cinavia hangs around the 15khz. Does anyone know how a retail version tells the player it is legit, and if this info is common could it be muxed into an MKV?

  • Robert

Add LG BP620 to the list of players not to purchase. What is so bad about this is that I purchased these discs to make a single back up copy which is all legit. Now the back ups won’t play on the LG BP620. So, I’m being punished retroactively even though I followed the rules. So, back to the store the BP620 went. Also, not purchasing another Cinavia disc.

  • Joe

Seriously is there a fix in the works for this cinavia garbage……..

  • TRONN

IS IT BOTH DVD AND BLURAY OF MIB3 THAT HAVE CINAVIA

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

If the player is built in with cinavia protection, its difficult to get the playback problems settled, you can only play the original disc but not the copied disc.

  • PLUG

I muxed a dvdrip audio onto the 720 mkv and it plays fine

  • http://www.facebook.com/adam.rose.96558 Adam Rose

Find the video water mark that relates with the audio mark. Go deep into the video blank signal. Once it is found then it can be removed. That mark in the video is the que and when synced with the audio mark it triggers a signal to the audio circuit causing it to mute. I believe this will be fully hacked eventually. One other method is to mess around with players firmware scripts.

The Blu-ray of Safety Not Guaranteed has Cinavia protection. It’s from Sony so no surprise there.

If the DVD is not cinavia protected, you may directly copy it and use it on your player.

  • minimog34

I would like to add that there are versions of Amazing Spider-man online without cinavia protection.
Maybe amazing spider-man is a movie like kungfu kid (I know karate kid), which is released in different regions some with and some without cinavia???? I really do not know I only wanted to share that not all amazing spider-man 2012 versions have cinavia. Keep up the good work.

  • minimog34

I was wondering (please note I don’t know anything about sound editing or frequencies etc.) if cinavia kicks in after 20min of play would disrupting the sound every , I don’t know 5 min infleunce cinavia? I mean if I were to recode the sound and break the sound with 1 second or milisecond of pure nothingness. Would this prevent cinavia from working?

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Cinavia protection is just a new protection with developing. So its not easy to work with the problem as you said, but our team has now succeeded in solving Cinavia problem for PS3 users with firmware from 1.6 to 4.0

  • Ghost

    Hint: Non referenced interlaced frames!

  • ritchiefx

hi minimog34, all bluray versions of amazing spider-man has cinavia on the english dts master track, however the english track dolby digital 5.1 from the dvd is not infected with cinavia, so you can demux this audio and add it on the bluray instead the dts master track, you can find tutorials how to do this on google keeping the original menus and extras, son if you can find online versions of this movies without cinavia probably the did this replacement, tip: i do this but i have to delayed this audio 1 sec because this was out of sync,

  • Anonymous

If in the future you will be able to detect the sound data that triggers the protection it will be possible to decode only the few involved frames, remove the problematic sound and then replace that piece of audio so the only part reencoded is the frame with the problem and almost all the track is uncompressed without to give up all the extras, menus and stuff like that right? I think this is the only and best solution to defeat this protection, but maybe you have something better in mind

Can I convert my file (Blu Ray rip, MP4 format)) of The Campaign to a differnt format to play on a PS3, that Cinavia won’t block?

Everyone – Stick with Total Media Theater version 5.3.1.146. This is what I am using now with Win 7 64 bit ( Works fine on 32 bit as well ) . This is the very latest version that does NOT have the Cinavia bug in it. You should never have to worry about Cinavia for quite a while. In the mean time, we are all hoping and waiting DVDFAB to perfect their technique to remove the Cinavia on the audio track….. Cheers

Hope that the list above will be updated for all future discs with Cinavia as we go along. Thank you

Seeing as it’s from Sony, it should come as no surprise that the US Blu-ray release of Looper is cinavia protected. It’s about time DVDFab has a solution for standalone players.

  • Nick

Does anyone know of any bluray players with no cinavia?

  • Abaregi

You can add Looper to the list.

  • McThabgerer

Add Safety Not Guaranteed to the list. I burned an MP4 file to a DVD and played it on a Sony Blu Ray player. About 16 minutes into it, a message popped up saying something to the effect of content was unauthorized to play on this disk, disabling sound. However, what’s interesting is we put that MP4 onto a thumb drive and played it directly and it worked. No Cinvea interruption.

  • Anonymous

Looper is listed above with an asterisk about releases not by Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios or Disney. Does that mean the UK release by Entertainment One is not Cinavia protected?

  • http://www.dvdfab.com DVDFab-Johnson

Usually different discs may adopt different protections. As we can see, most discs from Sony Pictures are released with cinavia protected. DVDFab now only offer cinavia solution for the playback on PS3. You may try it out.

    The
BDMV-REC that I created for “Men In Black 3” (which has “Cinavia” protection) didn’t
work. First, I made a normal BD25 backup copy of the main movie (without using
the BDMV option). My Blu Ray internal burner is an LG WH12LS39. In both my Blu
Ray players, an LG BD550 and a Samsung BD-5100, the movie played fine for about
25-30 minutes until the Cinavia Protection Message #3 popped up. I then successfully
burned a BDMV-REC copy of the main movie on a BD25 disc. That BDMV-REC was not
recognized by either of my Blu Ray players, so I bought a Sony BDP-S590. This
is one of the only Blu Ray players that will recognize and play BDMVs. However,
much to my surprise, I got the same Cinavia protection message #3 after about
25 minutes of watching the movie. Why didn’t it work? How can I make a successful
DVDFab backup copy of a movie with Cinavia ?

  • Lapetre

I suggest the best thing to do is to wait for DVD FAB to come up with a successful removal solution for this virus Cinavia. They will get there, just takes some time as we all know it. Just like the BD+ and AACS a while back. In the mean time, you should pick a player with no Cinavia capability on it. There are quite a few out there…. Check out EBAY. Good luck.

  • Doktor McNasty

I have an E5300 and yes it is cinavia infected. However I also have a Samsung 2011 smart TV which can play video over LAN and it is not cinavia infected. So I’ll start watching it on the E5300 and then when cinavia mutes the audio I just switch to watching that same file through the LAN on the smart TV

I took wrath of the titans and remuxed a sound file of pink noise with very low volume, the Cinavia encoding is a silent bar every 20 secs for a millisecond or so, mixing a low lvl sound into the soundtrack does not remove Cinavia but cons your players into not recognising the Cinavia coding (or silence) Try it, what have you to lose except an hr, or easier, buy the original :)

  • ramiro

Hello everyone, firth of all, i apologize for my english.

i was wondering..the Cinavia encoding is a silent bar every 20 secs for a millisecond or so… if we take the original audio line, file, whatever, and we copy this file and paste it over the original but… some miliseconds after or before it, you know as if we want to generate a rever efect but almost imperceptible, i mean not audible. could it works to make the bd player can not recognize de cinavia code? I don’t have the elements to try this test, but if enyone in DVD fab or in his house could, it would be great!!!

Do Hitchcock, Les Miserables, Red Dawn, Rise of the Guardians, Life of Pi, Gambit have cinavia? Can anyone please help. Thanks.

  • Daniel Kevorkian

I’ve been taking the Cinavia protected movies I’d like to backup and converting them to a MKV. Then I copy them onto a USB external hard drive that I’m using for Cinavia protected movies. I can play back the MKV on my Sony BD Player with no Cinavia prompt. I assume its because the Cinavia prompt is generated when the BD Player/PS3 checks the Disc for the data it needs to verify it is not a copy. Since there is no DVD or BD it has nothing to check against and keeps working. That’s an option for you all who aren’t too attached to your physical discs.

  • Zoohair Shaio

None on Rise of the Guardians, Life of Pi. The rest is unknown

  • RaiderMax

Until someone cracks the Cinavia code, which will hopefully be sooner than later, you can employ a method of playing protected movie files that have a DTS audio track on the PS3. I have successfully been doing this for about 2 years now and have never had a problem. It is not for everyone but here are the parameters: 1. You must stream the video/audio to the PS3 via PS3 Media Server software (free online) on a pc (wired Ethernet works much better than wireless). 2. You must run optical cable audio from the PS3 to a DTS capable receiver. 3. The movie file must have DTS audio.
The reason this works, as mentioned above by DVDFab is that DTS audio that is embedded in a PCM stream does not trigger the Cinavia protection.
Hopefully some will find this as a workaround for the time being. To all you hacker brains out there: What’s the hold up in cracking this bitch???? Can’t be that hard is it? :-) Cheers!

Most tv’s have a pc port (VGA) these days and connect to your pc or laptop. Then you can have the audio directly to audio receiver and still play it with DTS sound if you use a coax (orange cable) from pc (if it has coax output) to audio receiver (3.5mm jack to red/white also works but no true DTS, I think.) Only blocks bluray players and PS3. That is my workaround, I’m just letting throwing it out there if some don’t know out there, they sell the VGA cable and aux cable in a package in stores to do this for 30 bucks.

Use Samsung Blu ray players before 2012 they do not have Cinavia. Use models bd-c6500 has Wi-Fi and can do Netflix and Vudu. cd-6900 does 3d disc. bd-c5500 does not use Cinavia and can do Netflix and Vudu but is not wireless unless you buy an extra dongle. these models I suggest because the older models can only Netflix. at least the 4 models I mentioned have Internet@tv which give you like 50 apps to pick from. the 2012 and above Samsung players with cinavia now have “smarthub” the updated version of internet@tv so you can do redbox streaming that you cant do on older models. however if you have a smart tv. then just get any model Samsung. Go to the pawn shop find one for $50 and ask them to le you test it. bring an infected disk and test it before you by it. or go to Cash America pawn shop they let you return any item in 30 days.

Im pretty sure your sony BD player just doesnt have cinavia detection, Im almost positive that cinavia will kick in for a file being played off the PS3′s HDD or usb. I had an older Sony BD player with no cinavia detection in it

Eitherway, as stated before, it’s time to boycott all of Sony’s products. They are spending more time trying to dictate how we may use our purchased products, and less time on product quality. Actually it’s software in the firmware that detects for Cinavia on Sony PS3. If you have the most recent firmware update then it will have Cinavia watermark detection. Who here knows about infrared technology (remote control) ? You know you can’t hear those signals and you can’t see those signals. Point the front of your remote into your digital camera such as your web cam, cellphone cam, video camera and press any button…you see flashes or a steady lit light. Now to hear the frequency put the remote up against an AM radio receiver and press any button on the remote…you hear sound. If you have actual electronic experience take the remote apart and attach a hobby speaker to the IR LED terminals and you hear very faint signal impulses very much like what you heard from the radio experiment. Now a filter can be made to make those signals inaudible to the human ear but the modulated impulses still exist. I’ve just showed you a scenario of how Cinavia works.
